The many vortices of a diaspora that never ceases to amaze
From Almanac of the Venetian presence in the world 2006
Each year, when I read the articles for "VeneziAltrove" I feel the way Mario Luzi expresses all too well in one of his poems: "You revive my expectations" A layman, I am personally amazed ah how automatically one becomes engrossed in the vortex of the diaspora of Venice’s cultural heritage in such detail. As a layman I lose myself. I lose myself in the infinite ways that great collections and thousand of products from individual work-shops were sold abroad; I lose myself in the intricate financial aspects: both the Barbarigo and Vendramin collections were sold; I lose myself in the vast circulation of the now-dispersed works and their complex routes in what is perhaps an infinite round of belongings, ownership, and different modes of exploitation; I lose myself in the attributions, I lose myself in how differently Venetians react today to the return of some of the great geniuses of the past; I lose myself in the multitude of nicknames, from Buranello to Zampallotta or young Mozart’s Cavalier filarmonico and more anything else, I lose myself in the ingenious interpretation that our authors and editor offer us every time. But the expression "I lose myself" should not deceive. It is a pleasant experience -walking along the streets, and experiencing unexpected sensations, almost like feeling you are a link in this dispora, a meaningful phenomenon to be followed with open eyes, waiting for new emotions. Just like when I "lose myself" on a foggy evening in the alleyways and squares that have become un-familiar to me. I really does revive your expectations.
