Events, producers and users
According to the Sixth Report on Cultural Production, presented on 22 December at the Fondazione Venezia, in 2008, exactly 2.020 events took place in Venice: 1838 were located inside the city of Venice while the remaining 182 in other places of the Province. Over the year, the Agenda Venezia website registered 1838 events for a total amount of 11.043 days, corresponding to some 30 events per day, lasting averagely 6 days each. Considering the kind of events, the significant cultural offer of Venice is confirmed once again. For its 90% it concentrates over the following typologies: visual arts (10,2%), music (16,9%), theatre and dance (12,1%), festivals (17,1%) conferences and conventions (42,2%). The number of 11.043 event days remains conspicuous in 2008 as well, but it is lightly smaller than last year. Such decrease is due to the absence of the Visual Arts Biennal, whose concurrent “Collateral Events” usually boost the number of event days. In the Venetian cultural scene, the visual arts are absolutely predominant occupying more the 8.275 days, representing almost 79% of the whole amount of event days. This fact is also due to the duration of art exhibition, which is of averagely 46 days. Following we find conferences and conventions with 788 total days, lasting averagely one or two days. Music events are concentrated in 496 days, equal to the 4,5 %, then dance and theatre with 466 days, amounting to 4% of the total.
In 2008, temporary events organizers were more than 130 in the area of Venice. There are four main groups of organizers, divided according to characteristics, importance and role in the organization: Foundations and institutions, Public entities, cultural associations and private structures. In 2008 as well, events have been more concentrated in the old historical centre, even if events in the hinterland and Lido increased. The number of events taking place in the old centre was equal to the 65,3% of the total; while a smaller share of events, the 31%, took place on the mainland and the remaining 3,8% was organized in Lido or other small islands. Visual arts, conferences and conventions took place mainly in the historical centre, with respectively the 79,8% and 72,2%. On the mainland, theatre and dance were stronger, due to the great presence of theatres (61,5%); film exhibitions (61%) were concentrated at the Casa del Cinema. Music events, divided into many typologies, were prevalent in the historical centre (61,6%). Between the most exploited locations are Ateneo Veneto, Mondadori bookshop, La Fenice theatre, new Casa del Cinema and Pasinetti Video Library with many film exhibitions but also Palazzo Malcanton Marcorà, hosting many conferences and meeting organized by Ca’ Foscari University. In the mainland, Candiani cultural centre is the main place for cultural events in the city of Venice with its 334 events. Within the islands, major event locations are San Servolo Island, the seat of the Venice International University, and San Giorgio Island with the Cini Foundation.
Matching each location with the number of event days, the most active ones in the historical centre are Querini Stampalia Foundation, Correr Museum and Palazzo Fortuny, with more than 500 opening days, but also Ca’ Pesaro, Ca’ Rezzonico and the Swiss cultural centre with some 300 days, following many other Palazzos and academic locations scattered throughout the city. In the mainland, activity days at the Candiani Cultural Centre have remarkably increased, reaching number 951, following are galleria Contemporaneo and Toniolo Theatre. The density of events taking place simultaneously each day and their distribution is useful to understand the economic impact of this initiatives as well as the extreme “overcrowding” registered during certain period of the year when compared to others. From this investigation two elements were obtained: - the number of event per month; - the density of events taking place simultaneously each day. The density of events per day and per month is a useful tool to understand their distribution over the year and to determine their timing. In 2008, every month, more than 153 events took place, during the month of May, October and November organized events were more than 200. The daily density demonstrates that the busiest season is Autumn, from September to November. 11.043 event days correspond to 30 events per day, the time of the year with the highest concentration of events goes from September to November, when the number of simultaneous events per day raises to 60.
